Easy To Know Waterproof Or Water Resistant | IPX Rating Chart

What is IPX Rating and Why is it important?

ipx rating chart

IP means Ingress Protection or International Protection standard, but while it comes with X (IPX rating), then you should understand that it describes product protection level from dirt, dust, and moisture, etc. Because the ingress protection rating uses two for partial protection and water protection. And you can see a lot of IPX7 and 8 rated products in the market but very few brands bring IPX9 rated headphones and other products at the moment.

So, The first two sign IP rating is X, and the second describes the water protection level (dirt, dust, and moisture, etc).

Below I Describe Every Breakdown Of IPX Rating

IPX1 Rating

While a device with a water resistance rating can survive in water vertically for 10 minutes with 1 mm of water per minute.

IPX2 Rating

While a device with a water resistance rating can survive in water tilted at a 15° angle and tested the device in 4 positions with 3mm water in 10 minutes.

IPX3 Rating

While the water is sprayed at different angles up to 60° top of the device from the vertical axis and the pressure of water 50-150kP with 5 minutes. And this test process using 50-liter water and is sprayed by a nozzle.

IPX4 Rating

While it comes the rating 4, the test process is the same as previous but here sprayed the water from any direction at least 5 minutes.

IPX5 Rating

This testing process is the same but sprayed with a 6.3mm water jet nozzle at any angle in 15 minutes and every minute spray 12.5-liter water.

IPX6 Rating

When sprayed the water using 12.5mm water jet nozzle from any direction for at least 3 minutes. And with 100-liter water every minute.

IPX7 Rating

When a device can survive from at least 3 fit underwater without any physical damage within 30 minutes. After passing the test we called the product fully waterproof. At the moment, a lot of IPX7 rate product is available in the market like swimming headphone/earbud.

IPX8 Rating

When a device’s duration of testing is determined in cooperation with the manufacturer (there’s no specific time but it’s usually longer than the testing time for the IPX7 rating).

IPX9 and IPX9K Rating

Testing is extremely harsh. Rubber and plastic parts frequently melt and deform during testing. The selection of material type and retention of shape under load is extremely critical when it comes to designing the equipment enclosure, seals, and exposed components. At temperatures of almost 180° F and pressures of up to 1450 PSI, the product is subjected to a tremendous amount of stress for those two minutes. Basically, the automotive gear is IPX9 & IPX9K rated.

I think now you have thinking about Dust IPX Standards. Don’t worry, below every breakdown, just check.

Below Check The Breakdown On Dust IPX Rating:

IPX0  No protection against contact and ingress of the device.

IPX1 Protection from the device 50mm or larger from entering the device body.

IPX2 Protection from the device 12.5mm or larger from entering the device body.

IPX3 Protection from the device 2.5mm or larger from entering the device body.

IPX4 Protection from the device 1mm or larger from entering the device body.

IPX5 Dust protected but most of the part not fully.

IPX6 Completely dust-protected.

But now Another Question Arises On:

IP55 Enclosure – Complete protection from contact with the enclosed equipment
IP65 Enclosure – Complete protection from dust, oil, and other non-corrosive material and moisture.
IP66 Enclosure Complete protection from contact with enclosed equipment, Protection from water, even from powerful jets of water.
IP 67 Enclosures – IP rated as “dust tight” and protected against immersion and water.
IP 68 Enclosures IP rated as “dust tight” and protected against complete, continuous submersion in water.
